How do I become an apprentice

Becoming an apprentice has never been easier, through the vast array of online courses available, and employers looking to hire and upskill their workforce.

What are the requirements for becoming an apprentice?

To become an apprentice you must:

  • Be aged 16 and over
  • Not already in full-time education
  • Living within England

It is a common misconception that apprenticeships are just for school-leavers, however anyone, of any age can enroll on an apprenticeship scheme. An apprenticeship is a great way to upskill in your current job or if you are looking for a complete change of career.

Do I need any qualifications to become an apprentice?

You do not necessarily need any formal qualifications to start an apprenticeship. However, depending on the level of the scheme you may need to have:

A GCSE in English and Maths.
If you do not have a GCSE in English and Maths you may need to undertake additional training, to bring your skills up to the level necessary.

What qualifications will I gain from doing an apprenticeship?

The qualification that you will gain at the end of your apprenticeship is dependent upon the level and its equivalent education level. The table below outlines the different levels and their equivalent education level:

As an apprentice you’ll:

  • Get hands-on experience in a real job.
  • Study for at least 20% of your working hours – usually at a college, university or with a training provider.

  • Gain job-specific skills.

An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience and get paid. You’re an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, you’ll have the right skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career.

It can take between one and 6 years to complete an apprenticeship depending on which one you choose, what level it is and your previous experience.

Will I need to pay to do an apprenticeship?

You do not need to pay anything to do an apprenticeship. Your study is funded by contributions made by the government and your employer.

How much will I get paid as an apprentice?

As a full time employee you will be paid at least the hourly minimum apprentice wage of £4.30.

If you are aged 19 or over, your pay will increase after 1 year of working in your role to be in line with the national minimum wage:

  • £6.56 – If you’re aged 18-20
  • £8.36 – If you’re aged 21-22
  • £8.91 – If you’re aged 23+.
